Due to scarcity ordinances passed by the United Nations, all food must now be sustainably sourced. While this initially put a damper on the fish trade that had long been a part of Korean life, eventually a few enterprising former fishermen pooled their resources to build up a tuna hatchery in Pyongyang. 65 years later, they are now the largest supplier of fish in Korea and parts of coastal China.
Their most ambitious structure to date, the Nautilus Fish Hatcheries are a skyscraper building with more than 20 floors dedicated to the hatching, housing and raising of fish.
The sets of 5 floor tall glass windows allow passersby to look in at the fish as they grow and provide the fish with natural light during the day and tint to black at night to allow the fish to develop under natural night-time conditions.
Fish and fish products are highly prized for more traditional Korean fare and are always popular with the wealthy, who can afford the price of real meat.
